Home cleaning tips for Allergies & Asthma

Many allergic asthma triggers lurk inside our homes. Things such as pet dander, dust, mold & tobacco smoke are the most common household triggers. When cleaning for asthmatics or people with allergies bear the following in mind:

  • Vacuum the mattress on your bed a minimum of once every month
  • If possible buy a vacuum with a HEPA filter
  • Cover the mattress with a mattress protector, preferably one that covers the mattress completely. Many of these are fitted with a zip to enable easy access
  • Use special dust mite covers on your mattress and pillows. If you don’t use covers wash pillows at least four times a year and replace yearly
  • Avoid using rugs and carpets especially in the sufferer’s bedroom. The best flooring to have is vinyl or ceramic tiles.
  • Ensure the floors are mopped with hot water and a light detergent every day or as many times as you can
  • Select the bedding that you use carefully. Most people prefer a ‘hollow fibre’ filling in their pillow and duvets, many people can be allergic to duck feathers and down
  • Wash bedding weekly in hot water that is a minimum of 54.4C
  • Wash curtains monthly or if you have blinds wipe with a clean, damp cloth
  • Clean or replace filters on your air conditioning system on a monthly basis
  • Clean or replace shower curtains with mold on them
  • Declutter, books, knick knacks and stuffed toy collections can be collection areas for dust or other allergens
  • Beware of harsh cleaning products, if you find that household cleaning products stimulate your allergies try to use unscented gentle products
  • To cut down on dust mites in the mattress, put your mattress outside in the sunshine when it is a hot day but there is low humidity
  • Reduce dust by damp dusting furniture. Wash over all surfaces with hot water and a neutral detergent and dry with a second clean cloth. Again do this as many times in the week as you can.
  • Clean in a well ventilated area, open a door or window or turn on a fan. The person with allergies should be out of the room when sweeping or dusting or when you are using cleaning products that trigger their allergies

Keeping a clean home is an important strategy for preventing allergies
